Meeting with the legendary translator Pavel Ruslanovich Palazhchenko

February 19, 2015 the staff and students Sholokhov met the legendary translator and interpreter Paul R. Palazhchenko, the author of the remarkable book "My Unsystematic Dictionary" and many other works useful for a translator in his career path. At the meeting, which was moderated by the RIAS director  Rustam Gubadullin, Paul  Palazhchenko gave much valuable advice to will-be translators - Sholokhov University students. They are sure to remember that.

  • It`s a must for a translator to read the morning newspaper in a foreign language like brushing the teeth;
  • A translator never stops working on his professional skills, he is improving with every day;
  • Better leave the text in the original rather than ill-translated ;
  • An important ethical rule: do not dumping, work in pairs in translation booths, do not try to earn all the money in the world, think about your colleagues!
  • It`s a matter of honor for a Russian translator – to know another Slavic language

Paul R. Palazhchenko used to work with top officials of our country. You can see a lot of photos where he accompanies Mikhail Gorbachev, interprets at the most crucial for the future of the world (without unnecessary pathos) negotiations. You will easily recognize him in those pictures: nowadays he looks just like he does in the 30-year-old photographs...

We wish Paul R. Palazhchenko to raise the bar for the national school of translators even higher.
